About us

A dream come true!

My name is Sofie, and I have worked in the tourism industry for several years, both in hotels and hostels, as well as in travel sales and tourist information. Ever since I first set out into the world as a backpacker, I’ve dreamed of one day running my own hotel & hostel. After four years in Australia, my dog Lily and I came to Sweden and, during a wonderful holiday on Öland, found what was then Pensionat Alvaret.

We chose to settle here because I see great potential in Alvaret.

The location is perfect.

You’re close to everything – the local amenities, while still being just a short distance from the sea, farmland, and the unique alvar landscape.

Alvaret Hotel & Hostel is the new name.

The history of Alvaret dates back to the early 1900s, when it became Löttorp’s first dairy. It was later run as a guesthouse until 2016, when we took over and fully renovated it into a hotel & hostel. We are very proud to continue Alvaret in a new chapter and hope that you will enjoy your stay with us just as much today as guests did back then.

Below you can read Alvaret’s historical timeline.

    The Dairy’s Early History

The dairy’s early history dates back to 1909, when local farmers signed agreements to supply milk to the dairy. In total, they counted 404 cows, and at the first delivery, six farmers arrived with their milk cans.

  • 1912

    Löttorp’s First Dairy

The main building was originally built as Löttorp’s first dairy and was completed in 1912 at a cost of 3,500 kronor.

  • 1924

    Adapted for Butter Production

In 1924, the building was extended and adapted for butter production. An additional structure was built at the time, which is now the Handicraft House located directly across the road. At the dairy, separators and pumps were powered by a wood-fired steam boiler, so the dairy worker had to rise early to build up steam pressure and heat the premises. Coal was shoveled in through a hatch in the wall – a hatch that can still be seen today on the front of the building.

    The Dairy Relocates

In 1937, the dairy moved to new premises, now the location of Rosa’s shop, and was eventually closed when the Öland Bridge was completed in 1976.

  • 1989

    Becomes a Guesthouse

The guesthouse was founded in 1989 by a woman named Marianne Kärnberg. She built the row of cottages we now call the West Coast Cottage, and soon after, a glass-enclosed sunroom was added to the barn. After Marianne, Pensionat Alvaret was owned by Björn and Runa for 12 years.

    Alvaret Hotel & Hostel

Alvaret Hotel & Hostel has been the new name since we took over in 2016. The former guesthouse has been fully renovated and brought up to modern fire safety standards.
